Roma

Roma - what to say(a)?  It is a concrete jungle(a).  Unfortunatley for you all this is a long entry and there maybe others like it, as I thought I may treat this kind as a diary.  There are some incredibly large and epic things here.  Which are definately EPIC!! Some of them more so then I imagined.  However I miss grass.  My image of Rome didn't paint it as a dirty city, however that's certainly the way it appears, maybe it's cos I'm a relative newbee to this whole world travel thing.  I now know how New Zealand cities get such a reputation for being clean and green.  There have been several things that have stood out to me -
1) the driving is crazy, I never thought NZ drivers were particularly good, but my opinon has definately changed!!  No indicating, taking up two lanes appears common place.
2)  the parking is equally as crazy

I'm not even sure exit by 'braille' will work here.
3) it's weird adjusting to people driving on the right side of the road (yes I know a lot of people will be familiar with that - but this is my first time in a right road side driving country).
4) you can buy cigarettes at a vending machine - I just find that odd and somewhat sad.
5) there is so much graffiti - the metro trains are covered in it, as are some of the buildings around.
6) they have packaged toast - odd, what happened to fresh bread you toast yourself?
7) the italian langage is awesome(a), it sounds so sexy(a) or something(a) like that(a)
Places seen
Basilica di San Pietro (St Peters Basilica)
- this was way more amazing then I envisaged.  It was HUGE.  The dome was huge, filled with amazing mosaics, the view from the top awesome.

The inside of the dome, much better then the picture depicts

Some of the view from the top

Us on the way up
- the church itself once again amazing, and HUGE.
Hard for words to explain - best to insert pictures!!
Unfortanetly you don't really get the epicness from this picture.  You'll have to trust me it was epic.

Some of the amazing inside

At the base of the dome looking down at those little people

Gaurds - just for a laugh

Musei Vaticani (Vatican Museum)
- once again more amazing then I had thought.  Ceiling after ceiling of awesome paintings.  To cap it off the cistene chaple - unfortunately not allowed to take pictures in there.

Epicness that is the ceiling - there were many of these.

Blown up so you can see the sign . . .

Panteon

Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain)
- threw in a coin as is the custom.

Piazza di Spagna (Spanish steps)

Obviously we weren't the only ones there :)

Colosseo (Colossum)

- this once again was HUGE.  Definately worth a looksee.

Complesso del Vittoriano
- a newer building just for Rome to say - BOOM we are still awesome and can still create epic stuff.

Musei di Villa Torlonia
- not really worth it, but we had a spare entry on the Roma pass so decided to use it on that.
Food eaten
- pizza and pasta of course these had to be done it is of course Italy.

One more thing for a laugh

Prayer thanks
- for safe travels thus far.
- for the enjoyable time we've been able to have thus far on our journey.  With Rae and in Rome.

Prayer requests
- continued safety and enjoyment while we travel.
- for us to continue to make both us and God a priority.
- continue to pray for OM Bethesda and their need for a car.

  1. Wow! You two certainly have been busy. It looks totally epic and it is weird to think that half of us kids are in the Northern Hemisphere! I particularly love your two pictures of signs - Jono mimicking what to do on the stairs, and the compliance with "lawn requirements". Love you both xoxox

  2. So I totally forgot a couple of things
    1) all the cars there were tiny, it was rear to see a Aidan, or a station wagon, let alone a van.
    2) pedestrian crossings = taking your life into your hands, crossing the road is a scary experience.
    3) what on earth is up with fizzy water?

Lol and one more thing - Jono affectionately calls the parking there " car snuggling"

  3. Aidan = sedan?
So Roma is like the Middle East then in terms of crossing the road ;o)
I agree - fizzy water? What the?
And car snuggling - so cute! His "terms" are catching on, another Jono-ism I'm about to undertake is "procrastibaking".
